Step 5 — Phone companion
Screen recording is the biggest risk when using Tavra during a proctored exam. Phone-companion mode moves the entire chat display onto your iPhone (or any browser), so nothing Tavra-related is drawn on the Mac at all.
Required for screen-recorded exams.
On Mac the on-screen overlay is visible to screen recordings and screen share. If your exam is proctored, recorded, or watched live, phone mode is not optional — set it up before the exam starts.
Setting it up
- On your iPhone, open Safari and go to
app.trytavra.com/phone - Sign in with the same email/password
- Keep the tab open — the screen stays on by itself (wake-lock)
Using it
On the Mac, from your exam tab:
- Press ⌃⇧P — the overlay disappears from the Mac and the phone flips to "Ready"
- Press ⌃⇧X to screenshot the question — the preview appears on the phone
- Press ⌃⇧T to enter typing mode — start typing your question, it streams live to the phone as you go
- Press ⌃⇧S to send — the AI answers on the phone (with the model name shown underneath), the Mac stays clean
- Press ⌃⇧P again to bring the overlay back to the Mac
The phone is view-only.
You never touch the phone during an exam. All input is via the Mac's keyboard, all output shows on the phone. The chat auto-scrolls as it grows.
